The front desk is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 7pm, and Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Make sure to bring valid government issued identification.
Requesting (and Receiving) Your Traffic Accident Report Through the Mail
You may request your traffic accident report via U.S. mail. You must include the following:
- A legible copy of a valid government issued ID or driver license.
- A signed typed or handwritten letter containing your traffic accident information: (Your name, date of birth, report number, date and time of your accident, location, etc).
- A check for $9.00 made payable to: City of Costa Mesa.
- A self-addressed stamped envelope.

Important Items to Note About Obtaining Your Report:
- The Costa Mesa PD does charge a $9.00 convenience fee when you request a traffic accident report both in-person and via U.S. Mail.
- Your traffic accident report request will be reviewed for eligibility for release.
- Accident reports may take around 7 to 10 business days to process from the date of your accident.
- If you go in-person to the Costa Mesa PD front desk, you must present valid government issued identification and payment when picking up your accident report.
- You must pay with cash or check only.
- If you do not have your report number, or have any questions about your accident report, you may call the Costa Mesa Records Bureau, available 24/7, at 714-754-5373.
Serious Accident? You May Need to Fill Out a DMV SR-1 Form
California law requires that you fill out a DMV SR-1 Form within 10 days of your accident if:
- There was property damage of more than $1,000
- Anyone was injured
- Anyone was killed
